1946 -- 'NBC's Hour Glass' debuted. Appropriately, it
was the first 60-minute presentation on television.

1946 -- Candace Bergen ('Murphy Brown,' 'Boston
Legal') in Beverly Hills to Edgar and Frances Bergen. In
1975, she became the first female host of 'Saturday
Night Live.'

1961 -- FCC Chairman Newton Minnow famously calls
television a 'vast wasteland.' Shortly afterward, networks
executives announced plans for a show about an
immortal Scottish FCC chairman/swordsman who tried
to restore television's quality. Reportedly, the show was
to be called 'Wastelander.' . . . Okay, so I made up that
part.

1991 -- Michael Landon appears on 'The Tonight Show'
to talk about his pancreatic cancer and to blast tabloids
for their coverage. The interview in the segment was one
of the most poignant in television history.

1992 -- 'Golden Girls' aired for the final time.
