Samuel F.B. Morse tapped out the message "What hath
God wrought" in Morse Code. The message was sent
from Washington, DC to Baltimore. However, the
message did not have corporate underwriting.

1932 -- the Canadian Parliament passed a bill
establishing the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation
(CBC).

1940 -- ten years before the start of the Korean War,
Gary Burghoff is born in Princeton, Connecticut. Always
associated for his role of Corporal 'Radar' O'Reilly in
both the film and tv versions of 'M*A*S*H,' Gary is also
a noted wildlife artist.

           
1953 -- a then-unknown Rod Steiger stars in Paddy
Chayefsky's television version of 'Marty.' Ernest
Borgnine won an Oscar in the subsequent film role.


1974 -- On NBC's "Midnight Special," Richard Pryor is
host and Olivia Newton-John and Boz Scaggs perform.

            
1993 -- CBS airs the final episode of 'Designing Women.'


1997 -- Edward Mulhare, the spectrally reserved captain
in 'The Ghost and Mrs. Muir' and supervisor to David
Hasselhoff's 'Knight Rider,' dies of lung cancer at the
age of 74.
