| Samuel F.B. Morse tapped out the message "What hath God wrought" in Morse Code. The message was sent from Washington, DC to Baltimore. However, the message did not have corporate underwriting. 1932 -- the Canadian Parliament passed a bill establishing the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). 1940 -- ten years before the start of the Korean War, Gary Burghoff is born in Princeton, Connecticut. Always associated for his role of Corporal 'Radar' O'Reilly in both the film and tv versions of 'M*A*S*H,' Gary is also a noted wildlife artist. 1953 -- a then-unknown Rod Steiger stars in Paddy Chayefsky's television version of 'Marty.' Ernest Borgnine won an Oscar in the subsequent film role. 1974 -- On NBC's "Midnight Special," Richard Pryor is host and Olivia Newton-John and Boz Scaggs perform. 1993 -- CBS airs the final episode of 'Designing Women.' 1997 -- Edward Mulhare, the spectrally reserved captain in 'The Ghost and Mrs. Muir' and supervisor to David Hasselhoff's 'Knight Rider,' dies of lung cancer at the age of 74. |
