| 1918 -- Nancy Walker (real name: Anna Myrtle Swoyer) was born in Philadelphia. Her varied career included such roles as Rhoda Morgenstern's mother on both 'The Mary Tyler Moore Show' and 'Rhoda;' Mildred the housekeeper on 'MacMillan and Wife;' and Rosie 'The Bounty Quicker Picker-Upper' in a successful series of commercials. 1978 -- The made-for-TV movie 'Murder at the Mardi Gras' premiered on CBS-TV. The cast included David Groh, Didi Conn, Harry Morgan, Bill Daily and Joyce Van Patten. 1983 -- 'Laverne and Shirley' airs for the final time. By the way, do you know which of the two was tallest? Penny Marshall ('Laverne') is 5'6," while Cindy Williams ('Shirley') is 5'4." 1990 -- Susan Oliver died of lung cancer. Born Charlotte Gercke, the daughter of a journalist and astrologer, she played such memorable roles as Vina in the original pilot of 'Star Trek,' a very enticing but escape-prone female prisoner on 'The Andy Griffith Show' and Anne Howard on 'Peyton Place.' Multi-talented, Oliver was the first woman to fly solo from New York to Moscow. She also won a Tony in 1958. |
