1913 -- Ellen (Hansen) Corby is born in Racine,
Wisconsin. Although her big-screen work is limited, she
received a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination
for her role in 1948's 'I Remember Mama,' she is
best-remembered as the grandmother on 'The Waltons,'
a role for which she won 3 Emmys and 6 nominations.
Despite the wholesomeness of that role, Ellen
memorably played the head of a car-theft ring that swings
through Mayberry on 'The Andy Griffith Show' ('Don't
look back, Miz Lesh!') and as Pretty Boy's mom in the '74
telefilm 'The Story of Pretty Boy Floyd.' The petite Corby
even played Lurch's mother on 'The Addams Family.'
She suffered a serious stroke from which she never
recovered in 1976, after which she reprised her role as
Grandma Walton as best she could. She died in 1999 of
natural causes. She was 87.
