1940 -- In 20 years Ray Collins (above) will be Lt. Trask, righthand man of DA Hamilton Burger in 'Perry Mason,' but as of today he's also 'Crime Doctor.' The CBS Radio show stars Collins as Dr. Benjamin Ordway, a victim of amnesia who was once a criminal but is now a crimefighter. 1956 -- Elvis Presley's 'Hound Dog' breaks out of the pound. Or hits the street . . . Or something . . . I'm sorry. I just wanted to make a metaphor . . . According to Helen Clutton's book Everything Elvis, the King insisted on doing 30 takes of the song, finally settling on Take #28. 1957 -- The Everly Brothers appear on 'The Ed Sullivan Show'' to introduce their upcoming single, 'Wake Up Little Susie.' Their career on the charts will be over by 1962 but by then they will have 26 Billboard Top 40 songs and 35 Billboard Top 100 hits. The only duo with more are Hall and Oates. 1958 -- The first ever Billboard Hot 100 chart appears. Ricky Nelson's 'Poor Little Fool' is #1. 1987 -- The Federal Communications Commission voted 4-0 to rescind the 'fairness doctrine' for broadcasters. |
